How Many Babies do Otters Have at One Time?
A male & female otter will meet during mating season and mate. Fast forward 60-63 days and a litter of two to three otter pups are born. Due to the seasonal nature of their mating season, river otters start their lives in late spring to early summer. Baby otter pups are very small when they are born, only weighing 4-5 ounces. This means that they need their mothers to nurture them and provide them with food while they grow up and learn the ways of their species.

Baby otter pups are born without the skill of swimming, this is one main reason their mother keeps them with her for the first months of their lives. The mother otter will feed the otter pup and as it grows it will be taught to swim and hunt for food on its own.

Yes! Mother otters will wrap their pups in seaweed when they go and dive underwater to hunt for food. This is a means to keep them in a stagnant location, preventing the water currents from pushing them up or down the waterway. Baby otters have the same diet as their adult counterparts which consists of mostly fish, although they will eat crustaceans and small reptiles from time to time.
